Nos Calan Gaeaf Hapus!
A double magazine whammy this month, as my folk horror tale “Find Your Stone” appears in issue 5 of Gwyllion Magazine.
This story takes the legend of Y Ladi Wen (the White Lady) and pits the supernatural figure against two hapless teenagers in a graveyard. Always a good recipe for Halloween!
Gwyllion Magazine is one of the only Speculative Fiction magazines created and edited in Wales, and even more special, it’s bilingual! Every month features a piece in Welsh, and whilst I certainly don’t have the talent to write in Welsh (maybe some day!) I count myself lucky to have my story included with them.
“Del, what are those rocks about? I’m dyin’ to know?”
“Well, Cai, there’s an old tradition; every year, on Nos Calan Gaeaf, families gathered around a fire and wrote their name on a pebble. Then, they threw it in the bonfire and danced the night away.”
“Are you trying to get me to strip again, Del?”
I wheeze a laugh; the viewers love that. “You check in the fire once it burns down. You’ve got to find your stone, or Y Ladi Wen—Welsh for ‘The White Lady’—will steal your soul before the year is out.”
