‘Felicitas’ Excerpt: Hi, Hanna
I’m currently about halfway through my first draft of my SciFi novel, working title is ‘Felicitas’ because I suck at titles and there is no way I’m going to be able to name this story for like… at least another year. The story follows Shay Stanton in her search for her daughter Hanna, who went missing years previously from their home in Titan’s mining colonies.
Last week, I passed my midpoint, and it was such a huge relief, and milestone! I’ve written for a long time, but I often start stories, I gotta be honest here, I’ve rarely finished them. At least until recently!
Not sure what’s come over me in 2022 but it seems like I’ve woken up. I’ve been too afraid to write or finish a story since college (I dropped out, long story, I’ll get there one day!) and now, the floodgates have opened.
I really want to start sharing more about Felicitas and let you know how it’s going, so I’m going to start off by sharing an excerpt with you.
This passage is taken from early in our story, and without spoiling anything, this will be the first time in the book the reader gets to see Hanna.
“Hi, Hanna.” A voice murmured through the pod’s internal speakers.
Hanna’s reflection morphed and shifted, changing from her own as the internal display screen buzzed to life. An older woman appeared on screen with a long pointed nose and laughter lines in her eyes—such a beautiful, bright smile.
“Hi,” Hanna whispered back.
“How are you doing?” A familiar voice, low and husky. Soft brown waves tumbled down over her shoulders. Soft hands, the best hugs.
“I’m good. They look after me.”
“I miss you, dear.” Warm and loving. Stories at bedtime. Cookies and milk and Crickets.
Tears pooled in her eyes and slid back down her cheeks to her ears. “I miss you, mum.”
